Cardiac surgery (or what is more commonly known as heart surgery) describes any surgical procedure involving the heart or the blood vessels which carry blood to and from the heart.  Typically these procedures will arise with people who have suffered a heart attack or blood clot or indeed have heart disease.  The surgery may also be performed on people at risk of developing these conditions.  Sometimes the surgery can be open surgery, which is the most invasive, but there are also less invasive techniques such as robotic cardiac surgery which is performed through very small cuts in the chest with the use of tiny instruments and robot-controlled tools.  This is much more minimally invasive.

Whilst the majority of heart surgery in Ireland is carried out successfully, there are occasions unfortunately when things go wrong – and those errors can have far-reaching effects.  Cases we have seen over the years have included failing to diagnose what is a heart attack as something else, such as indigestion, below standard performed heart surgery, failing to diagnose an irregular heartbeat, failure on the part of a GP to refer the patient to a cardiac specialist and failing to diagnose an infection of the heart in a timely manner which went on to result in more serious injury to the heart valves, with a much increased risk of developing stroke.
