Workplace injuries involving an employee falling from height is unfortunately the single most common cause leading to a fatal injury in Ireland.  Falls from height also feature, to a large extent, in non-fatal type injuries and the victim usually suffering fractures and possibly head or brain injuries.

Work at Height Regulations exist in Ireland to protect employees and it includes any place where an employee could be injured if they fell.

Examples of working at height can include working on a roof, erecting formwork, working on a ladder, working next to an excavation and working on a bridge.

It is essential that employers carry out appropriate risk assessments for work activities being carried out at a height.  It is also essential that employees are suitably trained and given instruction in order to minimise risk.  It is essential also that the right personal protective equipment (PPE), working platforms and rail guards are provided and that this equipment is properly inspected and maintained.

The risk assessment needs to be very carefully considered as to what risks might arise from working at a height with the clear objective to taking steps to minimise the chance of a fall occurring, either avoiding the activity altogether or, where this is not possible, ensuring that the task is carried out in a safe as possible manner using appropriate equipment that is suitable for the job at hand.
