Farming in Ireland remains one of the most hazardous occupations for suffering injury or sadly in some cases fatal injury.  The activities of farming itself are wide and diverse and can include driving heavy machinery over uneven ground, being in contact with cattle and other large animals, maintaining heavy machinery, repairing farm buildings, working with slurry, and felling trees.  The scope therefore for suffering injury and death is wide ranging and very substantial.

Farms are workplaces and people employed on farms have the same rights under Health, Safety and Welfare law as any other workplace.

It is essential that farming tasks are managed safely and that proper risk assessments are carried out and where people are employed that they are sufficiently trained, supervised and provided with the appropriate equipment including machinery to carry out farm work safely.

It is worth noting that sadly more work related fatalities occur in farming in Ireland than in any other sector.  In the period 2011 to 2020 208 of the 495 work related fatalities that occurred in Ireland occurred in farming. These of course are so much more than statistics and each death leaves a trail of grief and devastation behind and we are conscious that each one of these deaths is a tragedy for each family.

Key research into farming injuries and fatalities have found that the majority of fatal injuries comprise of older farmers and sadly a number of work related fatalities involved children, that is people under the age of 18 and the vast majority of child fatalities are non-workers and usually arises when children are near to farming machinery or slurry.

The use of vehicles and machinery account for approximately half of all farming fatalities and a significant number of fatalities involve contact with cattle whether being knocked over or attacked by an animal.  There are a number of injuries and fatalities from falls such as falling through roofs and there are some fatal injuries involving machinery and loads collapsing such as bales.  Sadly, people have also lost their lives through drowning in slurry pits or water tanks.
