Lymphoma is a cancer of a person’s lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system. This is essentially the body’s germ-fighting network. It is comprised of the lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow. Typical warning signs can include fever, swelling on the face and neck, lump in the person’s neck, armpits or groin, breathlessness and excessive sweating. Approximately 900 people are diagnosed with this disease each year in Ireland.
When a person attends with their GP with symptoms that could indicate this disease, an appropriate referral should be made to an oncology department. To diagnose lymphoma can include a physical exam, blood tests, radiology examinations such as CT, MRI and PET, removing a sample of the bone marrow for testing, or indeed removing a lymph node for testing. Lymphoma treatment can depend on its type and can include radiotherapy or chemotherapy and in certain instances, bone marrow transplantation may be offered.
For a successful medical negligence claim, it would be required to show that the delay in diagnosing lymphoma caused the disease to progress and spread where it otherwise may not have. It is apparent that error in diagnosing lymphoma can have very serious consequences. The usual failures we would know of can include a failure to take a complete and accurate history with the person, either by the GP and/or the oncologist, a failure by the GP to refer to an appropriate specialist, and also an error in interpreting the various investigations and tests, which in turn lead to a delay in the diagnosis of the cancer.
