If you have been a victim of a collision and suffered injury involving an uninsured driver or a hit and run driver, then you can take a personal injury compensation claim against the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI).  The MIBI was set up to compensate victims of road traffic collisions where the other driver was uninsured or failed to remain at the scene.  It is estimated that approximately 7% of all vehicles on Irish roads are uninsured and this figure has been slowly creeping up; that equates to approximately 165,000 private vehicles out of a total of approximately 2.2M private vehicles on Irish roads.  There are certain specific requirements if making a compensation claim against the MIBI and they are set out in the MIBI Agreement which is the contractual basis for the operation of the MIBI.  It is important to seek legal advice when dealing with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland.
